2012 Sports Contractors Association annual conference to learn about latest surface developments

July 27, 2012
The annual Sports Contractors Association (SCA) conference, being held today at the Quay West Suites in Sydney's Rocks, is set to learn of new developments in tennis facilities, workplace health and safety, and new directions for the Association.
Presentations will be made by SCA President Mark Edmondson and TennisNSW Facilities Manager Brett Andrews while Australasian Leisure Management Publisher Nigel Benton will share his perspective of the newspaper and television 'beat-up' of artificial turf in Sydney media earlier this year.
The 'beat-up', later the subject of a feature in the January/February 2012 issue of Australasian Leisure Management, began when Sydney newspaper The Sun-Herald published a full page feature on the 'Threat of toxic playgrounds' with various side stories highlighting supposed dangers associated with recycled rubber infill with artificial sports turf.
Focussing on the recently completed synthetic surface at Northbridge Oval which during school days is used by an adjacent primary school, the Sydney Sunday newspaper highlighted a parents concern over his child coming home from the field with bits of rubber on them."
The parent was then quoted as saying "the health safety of our kids should be more important. There is no report that I can find that says this is 100% safe."
Author Natalie O'Brien then went on to highlight "widespread concerns about synthetic grass" stating, "the health of thousands of children may be at risk from long-term exposure to toxic chemicals from artificial turf that has become a popular replacement for grass on sporting ovals and school playgrounds around the country."
In his presentation, Benton will go on to explain how the industry countered this sensationalist reporting.
The SCA represents the most experienced, technically advanced sports surface builders and sporting equipment suppliers in Australia and New Zealand and its annual conference brings together members and industry leaders.
