Access to new Perth Stadium to feature full-body scans
September 19, 2017

Visitors to the new Perth Stadium will be subjected to full-body scans when the venue opens next year.

The PerthNow website reports that extensive screening will take place before people enter the 60,000-seat stadium, with fans to potentially be unaware that they are being scanned, with scanning being undertaken by unobtrusive portable pole-style metal detectors.

David Etherton, Chief Executive of VenuesWest, which has acquired the metal detectors for Perth Stadium, said the equipment would allow operators to detect any suspicious objects in an effective manner.

Etherton told PerthNow “in conjunction with CCTV and observation by trained event staff, the metal detectors will assist us to detect a potential issue before it escalates.”

VenuesWest already uses the so-called ‘wands’ as metal detectors at its other venues including nib Stadium.

After some local controversy over the first sporting event at the new venue, it is now likely that the Fremantle Dockers Women’s AFL team will play the first sporting fixture at the venue on 10th February next year.

Tickets will be priced at just $2, with all proceeds going to charity. Perth Stadium said more than 30,000 fans are expected at the match, which would break the attendance record for an AFL Women’s match.

The Western Australian Government will provide free public transport to and from the event.

Prior to the match, the Dockers’ men’s team will take to the field for a training session, with fans able to partake in a signing and photographic sessions afterwards.

The Stadium will officially open on 21st January with a free public open day.

Other major events scheduled for the stadium in 2018 include two Ed Sheeran concerts and an NRL rugby league double-header in March, as well as a friendly match between English Premier League football club Chelsea and A-League team Perth Glory next summer.
