Big Screens for Brisbane CBD?

A series of giant screens may be erected in Brisbane's King George Square and Queen Street Mall enabling people to watch major sporting events, New Year's festivities and other entertainment.
The screens will also host council marketing (10% of the time) and commercial advertising (20%) from which the Council would receive 5% of the revenue.
Under the plan, being considered by Brisbane City Council this afternoon, a 30 metre2 screen would go into King George Square, while a second screen of about 12 metres2 would be installed from the roof at the upper end of the Queen Street Mall between Albert and George Streets.
With the Council opposition supporting the move "in principle", Council is likely to approve a tender from Live Sites Australia, which estimates it can generate revenue of $240,000 for the council over five years.
The Council plans to take up a one-year contract and, if the screens prove popular and economically viable, take up two two-year options.
If the vote is successful the big screens would be erected early in 2011.
Live Sites Australia is an Australian-owned company which has provided large video screens for New Year's celebrations in Sydney and Melbourne, for FIFA World Cup matches, the Australian Open tennis and for the Brisbane Ekka.
The Council's Finance and Economic Development Committee Chair, Adrian Schrinner, said the screens would serve to enliven civic space and provide the community with more versatile public venues, stating âthis is all part of the councilâs vision to make Brisbane a vibrant and creative city. These screens are going to be a real asset to the Brisbane CBD."
