New Spurtan BV track opens at Sydney’s E.S. Marks Ahtletics Field

Sydney's Centennial Parklands is aiming to contribute to the development of the next generation of national sporting champions with the opening of a new synthetic running track at its E.S. Marks Athletics Field.
A Spurtan BV synthetic running track, installed by Sports Technology International, has been officially re-opened at the historic and popularly used community athletics stadium, managed by the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust.
Launching the world-class athletics running track, NSW Minister for Environment and Heritage Robyn Parker highlighted the NSW Government's $1 million investment in community and elite athletics, stating "we (now) have an internationally certified athletics track available for community use in Sydney.
"Over 50,000 patrons enjoyed this facility before this much anticipated upgrade, and we now believe that number will increase significantly with the opportunity to train and compete on this high quality synthetics running surface."
Centennial Parklands Director and Chief Executive Kim Ellis added "Centennial Parklands is renowned for its wide range of sports and recreational opportunities that it provides for millions of visitors each year, and this project delivers on the Parklands commitment to delivering outstanding community facilities for the whole community.
"This project also delivers on the Centennial Parklands Plan of Management 2006-2016 commitment to enhancing our sporting assets and infrastructure. We definitely see this as the first stage of improvements to be made here at E.S. Marks Athletics Field."
Originally constructed in 1906, the E.S. Marks Athletics Field was known in the mid-twentieth century as the home of athletics in Sydney. Originally named the Sydney Athletics Field, the facility was renamed in honour Ernest Samuel Marks, whose obituary in 1947 read: "(he) probably did more for amateur sport in Australia than any other man".
Centennial Parklands, a self-funded public parklands, is used by over 550,000 registered sports participants every year.
An International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) certified product, Spurtan BV is a 14mm, two-layer sandwich style polyurethane track system.
Its base layer consists of a black mat of SBR rubber granules bonds in polyurethane. The second layer is a seal coat using two-component polyurethane and EPDM Powdered Rubber. The surface layer is made up of colored EPDM rubber granules cast into a polyurethane flood coat.
