The NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has advised of the release of new guidelines on the best practice management and assessment of synthetic turf sports fields.
Released yesterday and targeted principally at local government, the introduction to the Synthetic Turf Sports Fields in Public Open Space: Guideline for Decision-Makers document advises “the use of synthetic turf as a replacement for natural grass sports fields has attracted high levels of interest from a wide range of stakeholder and community groups.
“Concerns include impacts on the local environment, perceptions of lost open space, and changes to the amenity for the local community.”
The document underscores the importance of balancing functionality, sustainability and community needs when considering synthetic turf for sports fields.
Throughout, it advocates for thoughtful planning, stakeholder engagement, and adherence to best practices to create adaptable and inclusive public open spaces.
In a communication sent to stakeholders, Jonathon Schipp, Executive Director - Infrastructure and Programs at the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, advised that NSW is “the first state in Australia to equip councils to undertake appropriate environmental assessments” also noting “public open space to support growing communities particularly in relation to sports fields is in high demand.
“The installation of synthetic surfaces as an alternative to natural turf sports fields is one way to meet growing demand and support greater levels of sports participation.”
Informed by extensive consultation with local councils, government agencies and peak sports bodies, the release of the Guideline is backed by a new Guidelines for Division 5.1 Assessments - Addendum for Synthetic Sports Fields and a two webinar events on Wednesday 25th June 2025.
Both guidelines are intended to aid in planning, designing, delivering and managing sports fields and serves as a practical tool for stakeholders involved in synthetic turf projects.
The Guidelines for Division 5.1 Assessments Addendum for Synthetic Sports Fields will come into effect from 25th August 2025, providing the Department time to ensure stakeholders understand the intent of the document and how to apply it to their work adequately.
