Smart advice on synthetic sports surfaces

Smart advice on synthetic sports surfaces
January 1, 2011

A new publication from the Smart Connection Company aims to provide readers with all they need to know about synthetic sport surface technology.

The Smart Guide to Synthetic Sports Surfaces, written by leading industry consultant Martin Sheppard, will help governments; councils; sporting codes, associations and clubs; and potential investors in making informed decisions about whether to use synthetic surfaces or not.

The Guide takes the reader through the history of synthetic surfaces from 1965 to the present day; the types of synthetic surfaces available; how different sports are adopting and investing in synthetic surfaces as well as environmental, design and maintenance considerations.

Sheppard wrote the Guide in response to a growing number of clients asking for detailed information about synthetic surfaces. Sheppard, a frequent contributor to Australasian Leisure Management, explains that "the technology and promises have improved but there are still many organizations who have committed to synthetic surfaces, without appreciating the difference in standards, resulting in the installation of an inappropriate product for their needs.

"The Guide attempts to reduce the likelihood of that happening by sharing the issues that need to be considered."

Sheppard also suggests that "as the sports industry enjoys greater usage of synthetics, call from governing bodies will be for higher standards - but is that really needed?"

The Guide explores the position of the key sports so that the reader understands the differences between community, state, national and international obligations.

The Smart Connection Company has undertaken a number of consultancies on synthetic sports surfaces and earlier this year staged a seminars on synthetic surfaces around Australia.
