Synthetic sport surfaces guide distributed to councils and sport organisations

The third edition of the Smart Guide to Synthetic Surfaces is being distributed free-of-charge to every local government, National and State Sports Organisation in Australia.
Written by Martin Sheppard of Melbourne-based recreation and sport consultancy the Smart Connection Company, the publication explains the how synthetic surface technology can really make a difference to local government and sport, in encouraging more people to play, recreate and participate in sport at a time when quality sports fields become more precious.
Sheppard, Managing Director of Smart Connection Company explains “we all know that sport can inspire a nation, now synthetic technology can create that opportunity for future generations.
“We hear that many local governments are keen to appreciate how synthetic surfaces work, what the cost are, if there are any concerns and other issues, so I have recorded all current information to help knowledge building.
“There is some mis-information about synthetic surfaces out there and we want to ensure that the reader has an objective understanding so that synthetic sports surfaces can be viewed as a complementary solution to natural grass.
“Sports that have standards for performance and some councils, sports and clubs may not appreciate the risk of installing fields that have no standards.
“The Smart Guide to Synthetic Surfaces will assist them”.
The Smart Guide to Synthetic Surfaces should be with every council and sport chief executive and general manager’s desk by mid-May. This has been made possible with the support of key industry suppliers who have supported this project.
Sheppard, who is passionate about the potential of synthetic surfaces, has a vision for every city in Australia to have a synthetic sports field so that every child has an opportunity to play sport, keep fit and have fun, no matter the weather and for all sports to work together to encourage more children to build sport into their daily lives.
He adds “I hope this Smart Guide will be one step to encourage governments to embrace the technology and use sport to inspire the next generation.”
Sheppard works with world governing bodies of sport including hockey (FIH), football (FIFA), rugby union (IRB) as well as Australian sports including the Australian Rugby Union, rugby league, AFL and Tennis Australia.
He is frequently asked to speak around the world on how synthetic surface technology can assist with the growing participation in sport.
