Turf One edge STI to win school synthetic AFL field contract
Synthetic sports field specialist Turf One Pty Ltd have been awarded the contract to build a multi purpose artificial sports field at Narrabeen Sports High School on Sydney's northern beaches.
Pittwater Council agreed the contract for the $1.2 million project to construct a synthetic sports field for AFL and football; facility lighting; goals; netting; line markings and a stormwater harvesting system to collect rainfall from the field and irrigate a reconstructed natural turf field on the site.
The artificial field will be a joint project between the Council and the NSW Education Department with funding from the Australian Football League. The AFL has provisionally pledged up to $70,000 for the project, the school put forward $40,000 in grant funding while the Council will pay the balance required through Section 94 contributions collected from local developers.
The School intends to introduce an AFL training program as part of its curriculum through training clinics for students while both fields will be available to community sport clubs outside school hours when not in use by the AFL.
Work on building the new fields is expected to be complete by December.
Pittwater Council General Manager Mark Ferguson stated "we're very pleased with the outcome of this historic agreement and the potential for increasing sporting activity in the local area."
Local media had reported that Sports Techology International (STI), supplier of the synthetic hockey surfaces at the London Olympics, was to be awarded the contract. However, Pittwater Council opted for Turf One, marking a string of recent artificial turf contract wins for the Melbourne-based company.
