West Australia’s newest world class sport facility, the Western Australian Institute of Sport High Performance Centre (WAIS) in Mount Claremont is set to open this April.

Located at Challenge Stadium within Perth’s elite sports precinct, the facility will open in time for West Australia’s top athletes to start 18 months of training before they compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

DWP Suters architects Sport and Leisure Leader Mike McGrath recently visited Perth to monitor construction progress and meet with alliance partner Sandover Pinder Architects and the WAIS team.

Commenting on the project, McGrath stated "we've designed an impressive centre that incorporates rehabilitation and recovery facilities, a strength and conditioning gym, hydrotherapy and ice recovery pools, altitude training, environmental and physiology laboratories, indoor sports hall, coaching and administration.

"For runners the floor can be lifted to simulate hills, and is lifted by a giant hydraulic system.

"I am excited about the upcoming completion of WAIS this year and seeing West Australian athletes train at the facility and go for gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games."

McGrath added that the WAIS team is looking forward to moving out of their current outdated facility and into the new high performance centre.

Perth’s ANZ Championship netball team, the West Coast Fever, will also be moving into a new headquarters, with the West Australian Netball Centre nearing completion.

Located within the Wembley Sports Park Development the new WA State Netball Centre includes headquarters and a training centre. DWP Suters (dwp|suters) and Sandover Pinder’s design for the building reflects its status as a state level elite sporting facility. The facility includes four international standard indoor courts, elite level change and training facilities, Netball WA administrative offices, catering and function spaces, plus support facilities.
